Henry E. Hale (PhD Harvard 1998) is Associate Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University (GW). His previous work has won two awards from the American Political Science Association, the Leon D. Epstein Outstanding Book Award (for Why Not Parties in Russia, 2006) and the Alexander L. George Article Award (for “Divided We Stand,” World Politics, 2005). His second book is Foundations of Ethnic Politics: Separatism of States and Nations in Eurasia in the World (2008), and his third is in press, Patronal Politics: Eurasian Regime Dynamics in Comparative Perspective. He has also authored two edited volumes and numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, and the National Council for East European and Eurasian Research. For 2009-12, he served as director of Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (IERES) at GW’s Elliott School of International Affairs. He regularly travels to the countries of Eurasia and has held post-doctoral fellowships from Harvard (1998) and the Kennan Institute (2009). Prior to joining GW, he was assistant professor of political science at Indiana University. He currently serves as editorial board chair of Demokratizatsiya: The Journal of Post-Soviet Democratization.
