While scholars often insist on the real-world relevance of nationalism studies, what are the advantages and opportunities for making use of one’s skills beyond academia? Continuing the vASN series focused on careers and professional development, this panel brings together a diverse range of experts who have blazed their own trails in putting their expertise to work in international advocacy, consulting, and writing. The conversation will address how one starts out, the challenges or pitfalls of going independent, how expectations differ from the academic world, and how one knows it’s the right choice.
Panelists:
- Elise Anderson, Uyghur Human Rights Project
- Dmitry Gorenburg, Harvard University
- Frankie Huang, freelance writer, illustrator, and strategist
- George Gavrilis, University of California, Berkeley
