Assessing the Hungarian Elections: Domestic and Regional Implications

This panel offers perspectives from Hungarian scholars on how to understand the results of the Hungarian parliamentary elections that took place on April 3, 2022. This was an election of particular international and regional importance, as the war in neighboring Ukraine took on a significant role in the campaign, and hopes for redemocratization in Hungary were deflated when the united opposition list failed to unseat the incumbent government. In addition, the election brought a new far right party into parliament. Our panelists analyze these results and what they tell us about the domestic impact of regional conflict, populism and nationalist politics, and the balance between illiberalism and democracy in Hungary today.
