2023 ASN Cluj

Message from Organizers:
Due to the coronavirus COVID-19, the 2020 conference has been rescheduled.  Mark your calendars for this year: The ASN’s 2023 European conference will take place in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, on 6-8 July, 2023.

Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB), in cooperation with the Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN), is pleased to announce a joint conference, “Nationalism and Populism in Semi-Peripheries: Central and Eastern European Responses to Global Challenges.”

The conference will be held from 6-8 July, 2023 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The conference will be co-organized by the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration and the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work of the Babeș-Bolyai University, together with the Romanian Institute for Research on National Minorities (ISPMN).

As the developmental optimism of the 1990s has faded and the popular belief that the region will join the core has diminished, Central and Eastern European countries are becoming a semi-periphery within the neoliberal post-communist order. Moreover, the established institutions of European and Western democracies are increasingly being challenged by populist and nationalist sentiments, brought on partly by the corrosive social effects of economic neoliberalism and globalization.

The main focus of the conference falls on the interrelations between the perceptions, representations, and realities of the semi-peripheral condition, and nationalism and populism.

We particularly welcome papers and panels devoted to the following themes:Demographic nationalism, demographic panic, and their link to political processes

  • Censuses and the “regimes of counting” associated with ethnic identities
  • Migratory processes and perceptions of migration (both in- and out- migration)
  • Minority policy regimes and the challenges of the current nationalist and populist turn
  • Explanations of nationalist populism, its emergence and types in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond
  • Forms and trends of nationalism and nation building, including cross-border nationalism and kin-state agency
  • Minority mobilization
  • The use of big data in ethnic and nationalism studies
