2022 Nationalities Papers Prize

The pandemic of the past 2 years turned us more introspective, as many of us lost access to fieldwork sites, had to endure lockdowns, and experienced difficulties in resuming research. Photos broke the constraints of our homes and helped us reconnect with past experiences while planning future work. We are proud to announce the winners of the Nationalities Papers Photography Prize in Nationalism and Ethnic Studies. Original photos taken during fieldwork were submitted for competition in 2022. These photos were judged in terms of their content, synthesis, and visually compelling insights about nationalism, ethnicity, or migration.

Each submission is accompanied by a brief description of how the photograph relates to the fieldwork of the applicant. The five winners of the 2022 Nationalities Papers Photography Prize are listed below, and their award-winning photos will be printed on the covers of Nationalities Papers during 2023.
