What is the relationship between populism and nationalism? While the two often overlap, they are distinct phenomena. Many contemporary populist leaders are nationalists, but not all nationalists are populists. Populists mobilize “the people” against elites and institutions, while nationalists mobilize against perceived domestic and foreign enemies, often defined in ethnic or religious terms. Both take left- and right-wing forms, and the boundaries frequently blur—particularly as many right-wing populists now embrace policies once associated with the left. This roundtable brings together leading scholars to examine how populism and nationalism intersect and diverge, and how these dynamics shape contemporary politics across the world.
