Sport and Nationalism

October 24, 2024

Sport entails multifaceted symbolic and political functions linked to nationalism, from banal
nationalism, expressions of national belonging and fostering identity to serving nation-building
and diplomacy purposes. The interplay of sport and nationalism has been present but not prominent
enough within the field of nationalism studies, while non-Western perspectives still demand more
attention in the broader scholarship. The panel will discuss the multitude of functions of
nationalism surrounding major sporting events such as the Olympics and the World Cup, bringing up
examples from Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
