Democratic Backsliding in the Balkans

Through a comparative analysis, including Bosnia and Croatia, the panel examined how EU accession and membership, subnational levels of democracy, and the extent to which the independent media and the judicial framework remained autonomous, may have contributed to democratic de-consolidation and the rise of authoritarianism.
